NEWTOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL LEED Gold Certified
The Newtown Middle School of the Council Rock School District is located off Richboro Newtown Road in Newtown, Pennsylvania. The project included a new LEED™ Gold Certified 196,486 square foot school. The building is a middle school consisting of 7th and 8th grades.
The building heating and cooling system includes three (3) condensing boilers and two (2) air-cooled chillers providing hot and chilled water throughout the building in a 4-pipe arrangement. Classrooms and offices are conditioned with a variable air volume system using rooftop modular air handlers with fan powered and shut-off VAV boxes. Larger spaces, including the gymnasium, auditorium, cafeteria, and other spaces are conditioned with single zone rooftop modular air handlers. All pumping and air handler fans utilize variable frequency drives for increased energy efficiency.
The Plumbing system consists of all low flow fixtures and two (2) central gas-fired condensing domestic water heaters. The building is fully sprinklered, and includes a fire pump.
The lighting system consists of dimmable LED lighting throughout the building with occupancy sensor override and daylight harvesting, tied into a central lighting control system. Exterior lights are LED controlled with relays tied into the central lighting control system.
The building includes a 40 kW rooftop Solar Photovoltaic system generating a minimum 50,000 kWh/year of power.
The low voltage systems consist of a fully wired data network, audio visual integration in the classrooms, remote sound systems in the auditorium, gymnasium and cafeteria, intercommunications speakers throughout the building tied into the phone system, addressable fire alarm system, access control and security systems, and closed circuit television recording system.
